On October 23-27, 2023, three MoZWE staff were participated in Bioinformatics training at the Center for Animal & Veterinary Service (CAVS), National Parks Board (NParks), Singapore.
Project: WOAH Twinning Project – Bioinformatics skill training
Activity: Among animal-origin emerging infectious diseases, approximately 70% have been identified to have origins in wild animal genetics. High-throughput screening (HTS) technologies such as Illumina and Nanopore can rapidly and accurately identify new pathogens emerging from wildlife. In this training, participants were taught a Bioinformatics pipeline using the command line in macOS and Linux operating systems. The training covered base calling and quality control of HTS sequences, sequence alignment, and annotation. This training applies to and supportive of wildlife disease surveillance systems and management.
Outcome:
- The trainee can establish a bioinformatics team, utilizing existing tools to effectively detect emerging infectious diseases and enhance surveillance efforts.
- Trainees can disseminate their knowledge to their colleagues and partners, fostering collaboration and knowledge transfer within the field.
