With over 20 years of experience, the Faculty of Veterinary Science, Mahidol University, worked on projects focusing on wildlife disease surveillance and monitoring. We have conducted field data collection, disease investigation, and laboratory diagnosis on more than 50,000 samples from wildlife, zoo animals, exotic animals, and livestock.

The surveillance data has been collected and sent to the government to implement disease prevention and control measures. The faculty is also responsible for animal welfare activities, including media production, consulting, and training for wildlife staff. In addition, the faculty works to educate the public about animal welfare and to train animal staff in best practices.

The Thai Cabinet approved the establishment of the Thailand National Wildlife Health Center (Thailand-NWHC) in the Faculty of Veterinary Science, Mahidol University, to serve as a collaboration center for monitoring, surveillance, and warning of wildlife and environmental threats, infectious diseases, and emerging diseases. The center coordinates the efforts of government, private sector, and educational institutions to improve community and environmental health.

The Thailand National Wildlife Health Center was established on May 3, 2011, through the collaboration of the Faculty of Veterinary Science, Mahidol University, the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation, the Department of Livestock Development, and the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources.

In October 2019, the Faculty of Veterinary Science, Mahidol University, signed a memorandum of understanding on academic cooperation with the USGS – National Wildlife Health Center (USGS – NWHC) of the United States of America to conduct the OIE Twinning Program to develop the coping capacity with emerging infectious diseases.
